Das neueste Pferd im Roadrunner-Stall hört auf den Namen STORM CORROSION und ist das Projekt zweier ambitionierter, namhafter Musiker: Auf der einen Seite PORCUPINE TREE-Mastermind Steven Wilson, auf der anderen OPETH-Fronter Mikael Åkerfeldt. Das selbstbetitelte Album soll am 20.04.2012 veröffentlicht werden, hier die offizielle Mitteilung von der Roadrunner-Homepage:
"STORM CORROSION ist der Zusammenschluss zwei der kreativsten Multitalente, die sich in der aktuellen Musikszene tummeln: Steven Wilson vonPORCUPINE TREE und OPETH‘s Mikael Åkerfeldt. Ihr erstes gemeinsames Album wird am 20. April veröffentlicht. Bereits seit Ende der 90er Jahre, als Wilson das hochgelobte „Blackwater Park" von OPETH mitproduzierte, verbindet die beiden eine enge Freundschaft. Über die Jahre haben sie zwar des Öfteren über ein gemeinsames Projekt gesprochen, aber wirklich in die Tat umgesetzt wurde dieses Vorhaben erst kürzlich. Mikael flog zu diesem Zweck zu Steve nach England, wo in dessen Heimstudio der Grundstein des selbstbetitelten Albums gelegt wurde, das von beiden gemeinsam geschrieben und produziert, sowie von Wilson gemischt wurde.
Atmosphärisch, episch (die Hälfte aller Stücke auf dem Album sind um die 10 Minuten lang) und ohne Frage überraschend - so kann man den Sound von STORM CORROSION wohl am besten beschreiben. Die Fans beider Musiker werden es sicherlich lieben, denn durch das aktuelle Solo-Album „Grace For Drowning" von Wilson und Opeth‘s „Heritage" wurden sie bereits bestens auf diese Veröffentlichung vorbereitet. Man könnte „Storm Corrosion" wohl treffend als eine Seite dieses musikalischen Dreiecks bezeichnen.
Wilson erzählt: „If you'd asked me three months ago about the music, I would have said, 'Expect the last thing you would expect.' But actually, now that 'Heritage' and 'Grace Of Drowning' have come out, I don't think it's going to be that much of a shock to people, because it's almost like a third part of the trilogy, in a way. If anything, it's even more orchestral, even more stripped down, even more dark, twisted and melancholic... but it certainly feels like it comes from the same place as 'Heritage' and 'Grace For Drowning', which indeed it does because it was written during the same period."
„Some of the music on this record I think is the most beautiful music I have participated on ever,"führt Åkerfeldt weiter aus. „There's some magical sections on there. Musically I think we've created something earthy, a bit frightening, exhausting, profound and rather intense. All at the same time. I can safely say I don't know any other band or artist that sounds anything like STORM CORROSION. I guess that was also one of our goals, so to speak."
