Im August erschien die Single „For My Queen“ – nach einem mitteldüsteren Melodeath-Album nun ein Powermetal-Feuerwerk mit gewissem Twist. Was wird das kommende Album sonst noch bringen und was ist eigentlich mit der deutschen Metal-Presse los (die hier zum Glück nochmal eine Chance bekommt)? Ein Status-Quo-Gespräch mit den beiden Gitarristen Matias Knuuttila und Toke Gerdts.
Erst einmal herzlichen Glückwunsch zu eurer neuen Single „For My Queen“! Da stecken so viele Ideen drin – und ich habe wirklich alles daran gefeiert. Euren Stil beschreibt ihr ja selbst als „Epic Melodic Death Power“. Auf dem letzten Album „Nemesis“ ist davon eher der Melodic-Death-Anteil zu spüren – es klingt deutlich düsterer und aggressiver als die neue Single, die ja fast schon reiner Powermetal ist. Was dürfen wir stilistisch vom kommenden Album erwarten? Welche Facetten stehen diesmal im Vordergrund?
Matias: Als wir mit dem neuen Album angefangen haben, hatten wir das Gefühl, nach „Nemesis“ etwas anderes machen zu wollen. Auch, weil wir das letzte Album mitten in der Corona-Pandemie geschrieben haben – und jetzt fühlte es sich nach einem völlig frischen Start an. Wir hatten keine fertigen Songs in der Schublade, also dachten wir, „Okay, schauen wir einfach mal, was entsteht“. Und wir wollten versuchen, es etwas geradliniger zu halten. Wobei, so richtig geradlinig wird es bei uns ja nie. Aber das Ganze nimmt schon eine etwas andere Form an – es wird definitiv nicht so düster wie „Nemesis“. Die erste Single gibt schon einen Vorgeschmack, sie repräsentiert allerdings wirklich ein Extrem.
Toke: Genau, denn ich würde sagen, „Nemesis“ war das andere Extrem. Das neue Album bewegt sich insgesamt wahrscheinlich irgendwo in der Mitte dazwischen. Viele sagen ja, dass man bei Growl-Vocals schnell in Versuchung gerät, sich ein bisschen darauf auszuruhen, wenn man nicht genau weiß, was man schreiben soll. Deshalb wollten wir diesmal die Gesangsmelodien stärker weiterentwickeln und haben versucht, mehr damit zu arbeiten. Dadurch wird es fast schon automatisch etwas melodischer oder Powermetal-lastiger.
Wie weit seid ihr denn mit dem Album? Was ist schon abgeschlossen, und was gibt es noch zu tun?
Matias: Im Moment sind wir dabei, die Aufnahmen abzuschließen. Das meiste ist im Grunde schon eingespielt, es geht nur noch um ein paar letzte Sessions und dann ums Mischen. In ein paar Monaten sollte alles fertig sein, bis Ende des Jahres haben wir das Album komplett im Kasten. Einen Titel gibt es noch nicht, auch kein genaues Releasedatum – aber erscheinen wird es im Frühling. Am Artwork arbeiten wir auch gerade.
Das klingt nach der Zielgeraden! Wird es vorab noch weitere Singles geben?
Toke: Auf jeden Fall! Unser Label, Reaper Entertainment, bringt gerade ein Tribute-Album für CHILDREN OF BODOM heraus, bei dem wir mit einem Cover von „Towards Dead End“ dabei sind. Das erscheint Ende Oktober. Aber es wird dieses Jahr auch noch mindestens eine eigene Single geben – und ich kann schon sagen: Die wird auf jeden Fall etwas anders ausfallen als die erste.
Es ist eine interessante Herausforderung, etwas völlig Neues auszuprobieren, und zu sehen, wohin es einen führt.
Im Pressetext stand, dass das neue Album ein Konzeptalbum mit einer durchgehenden Storyline wird. Könnt ihr dazu schon etwas verraten?
Matias: Ja, Esko (Esko Itälä, v.) und ich haben daran gearbeitet. Es wird ein lose aufgebautes Konzeptalbum, das sich um zwei verschiedene Charaktere dreht. Für uns war das super spannend, weil wir bisher noch nie ein echtes Konzeptalbum gemacht haben – und wir wissen auch nicht, ob andere das wirklich als „Konzeptalbum“ bezeichnen würden. Für uns ist es eher eine Art Storyline, die uns als Songwriter inspiriert und neue Wege eröffnet, bestimmte Stimmungen und Ideen in den Songs umzusetzen. Wir sind sehr gespannt auf das Ergebnis – und es ist natürlich auch eine interessante Herausforderung, etwas völlig Neues auszuprobieren und zu sehen, wohin es einen führt.
Vielleicht eine Standardfrage von Musikredakteuren, aber ich konnte tatsächlich nichts über euren Bandnamen finden. Was bedeutet „Gladenfold“ eigentlich?
Matias: Im Grunde ist es einfach eine Kombination aus den Wörtern „glade“ und „enfold“. Aber die Wurzeln dürften auch mit der Bandtradition zusammenhängen. Als die Jungs vor rund 20 Jahren Teenager waren (Matias stieß 2014 dazu), war die Folk-Metal-Szene in Finnland ein großer Einfluss – und ich denke, daher kommt auch der Vibe dieses Namens.
Toke: Man könnte es herunterbrechen auf „von Bäumen umgeben“, wenn man so möchte.
Wir bringen alle unsere eigene Note ein.
Was inspiriert euch heutzutage? Wie entstehen eure Songideen?
Matias: Meistens fängt Esko an, und dann bindet er den Rest von uns ein. Wir alle haben sehr unterschiedliche musikalische Hintergründe und Bands, auf die wir stehen, also bringt jeder seine eigene Note mit. Als ich selbst angefangen habe, Musik zu machen und mich für Metal zu begeistern, habe ich die damals in Finnland großen Bands für mich entdeckt – NIGHTWISH, SONATA ARCTICA, CHILDREN OF BODOM. Gleichzeitig habe ich aber auch einen starken Hintergrund im Progressive Metal und 80er-Hardrock.
Toke: Mein Lieblingskünstler ist DEVIN TOWNSEND, würde ich sagen. Und ein paar dänische Bands, zum Beispiel MEW. Außerdem höre ich gerne Death Metal und Shoegaze-Ambient – also sehr verschiedene Genres. Ich denke, all das fließt auf irgendeine Weise auch in unsere Musik ein.
Ich glaube, manche Leute mögen einfach die Kombination dieser Stile nicht
Matias, als ich mehr über GLADENFOLD herausfinden wollte, bin ich auf ein Interview gestoßen, in dem du sagtest, du glaubst, die deutsche Metal-Presse „hasst“ euch. Zuerst war ich davon überrascht, aber dann habe ich gesehen, dass ihr für „Nemesis“ in Deutschland tatsächlich eher mittelmäßige Rezensionen bekommen habt. In anderen Ländern fiel das Feedback deutlich besser aus. Woran liegt das, denkst du?
Matias: Schwer zu sagen. Die Sache mit unserer Band war immer, dass wir mindestens zwei Seiten haben. Als die Band vor langer Zeit anfing, hat sie Powermetal, Folk Metal, Melodic Death Metal und andere Genres miteinander kombiniert. Es war immer eine Mischung aus verschiedenen Stilrichtungen. Bei den letzten beiden Alben hat es sich dann stark auf „Powermetal trifft Melodic Death Metal“ fokussiert. Ich glaube, manche Leute mögen entweder nur Melodic Death oder nur Powermetal und halten nichts davon, dass beide Genres miteinander kombiniert werden. Andererseits gibt es auch Leute, die genau das gut finden. Ich weiß also nicht so recht.
Es hebt euch auf jeden Fall aus der Masse hervor. Wisst ihr schon, ob es für den zweitgenannten Schlag Leute eine Chance gibt, euch 2026 live zu sehen?
Matias: Definitiv. Wir werden auf jeden Fall ein paar Shows in Finnland spielen, und vielleicht bekommen wir auch die Chance, auf einigen Festivals in Mitteleuropa aufzutreten. Natürlich kann ich jetzt noch nichts versprechen, aber mal sehen, wie die Promotion und alles drumherum für das Album läuft. Wir sind natürlich zuversichtlich, und bisher sieht alles ziemlich gut aus. Hoffen wir also, dass wir richtig Fahrt aufnehmen und es sogar noch besser wird als bisher.

GLADENFOLD in Interview: Between Hatred and Harmony
Their style may divide opinion, but one thing is certain: they’re not running out of ideas anytime soon. The Finnish surprise package GLADENFOLD is currently working on their fourth studio album, venturing into uncharted waters along the way.
In August, the single “For My Queen” was released – after a somewhat dark melodic death metal album, now a power metal firework with a certain twist. What else will the upcoming album bring, and what’s actually going on with the German metal press (which luckily gets another chance here)? A status quo conversation with the two guitarists, Matias Knuuttila and Toke Gerdts.
First off, huge congratulations on your new single “For My Queen”. There are so many ideas packed into it, I really enjoyed everything about it. You describe your style as “Epic Melodic Death Power”. Your latest album, “Nemesis”, covers very much of the Melodic Death aspect, it sounds much darker and much more aggressive than the new single, which is basically pretty much Power Metal. Now that you’re working on the next album: what can we expect stylistically? Which side of your sound will be in focus this time?
Matias: When we started working on the new album the feeling was that after we finished “Nemesis” we wanted to do something different. Partly because we created the last album during the Covid pandemic time and now we had a kind of a fresh start. We didn't have any songs ready on the shelf so we were just like “okay let's see what we come up with” and we wanted to make it more straightforward. I mean, in our case it's never really straightforward, but in in the end I think it's shaping up a bit differently and it's definitely not that dark. The first single gives some ideas of how it's going to be, but then again this is more like one extreme end.
Toke: Yeah, because I think Nemesis was on the other extreme end and so the upcoming album in its entirety might be somewhere in between. With growling vocals, many people say that you might rely a little bit on that when you don't really know what to write. So we wanted to explore vocal melodies a bit more and tried to work with that. So then it came kind of naturally that it might be a bit more melodic or power metal-ish, because that's one of our other big influences, I'd say.
So how far along are you with the album? Which processes are already finished and which ones are still ahead of you?
Matias: Well, currently we are finalizing the recording. Most of the stuff is more or less recorded. So it's just like a few months of final recordings and mixing and by the end of this year we are supposed to have everything ready. We don’t have a title yet, neither an exact date for the release, but it will be during springtime. And we’re working on the artwork right now.
That sounds like you’re on the home stretch. Will there be more singles coming beforehand?
Toke: Definitely! Our label, Reaper Entertainment, is now releasing a tribute album to CHILDREN OF BODOM in which we are taking part with a cover of “Towards Dead End”. It will out in the end of October. But there will be at least one original single coming also later this year. And I can say that it will be a different kind of single than the first one for sure.
It’s challenging and interesting to do something you’ve never done before
The press release mentioned the upcoming album would be a concept album with a continuous storyline. Can you share anything about that?
Matias: Yeah, me and Esko (Esko Itälä, v.) have been working on that. It will be a loosely based concept album focusing on two different characters. And it’s been really interesting because we haven't really done a real concept album ever and we’re not sure if other people consider this a real concept album as well. Because it's more like a storyline for us as writers to find ways how we can evoke different feelings and ideas within the songs. And we're really excited about it, but it's also quite challenging and interesting to do something that you haven't done before and see how it turns out.
Okay, this might be the standard question for music journalists, but I actually couldn't find anything about your name. So what does Gladenfold actually mean?
Matias: Obviously it’s just a combination of the words “glade” and “enfold”, but it might have its roots in the tradition of this band. When the other guys were teenagers, like 20 years ago (Matias joined the band in 2014), the folk metal scene in Finland was a big influence and I think that’s where the name got its vibe from.
Toke: You could boil it down to “surrounded by trees”, if you’d like to put it like that.
We all bring some different flavor to it
So, what inspires you nowadays, how do you come up with ideas for your songs?
Matias: It's pretty much Esko, who starts out most of the time and then he'll bring everyone else in. And we all have very different musical backgrounds and music that we're into so we all bring some different flavor to it. When I started playing music and getting into metal, I discovered the bands that were big in Finland back then, like NIGHTWISH, SONATA ARCTICA and CHILDREN OF BODOM, but I also have a strong progressive metal and 80s hard rock background.
Toke: My favorite artist is DEVIN TOWNSEND, I would say. And some Danish bands, MEW is one. And then I also like death metal and shoegaze ambient, so that’s very different genres and everything sort of ties into our music as well, I think.
Maybe some people just don’t like the blend of these styles
When I wanted to know more about GLADENFOLD, I came across an interview where you said that you believe the German metal press ‘hates’ you. First I was surprised by this statement but then I found out that in fact you really received rather mediocre reviews for “Nemesis” in Germany. In other countries the perception has been way better. What do you think is the reason for that?
Matias: Hard to say. The story has always been that our band has kind of like at least two sides. When the band started way back they infused power metal, folk metal, melodic death metal and different kind of genres. It's always been a blend of different music styles and now the last two albums it really came down to “power metal meets melodic death metal”. I think some people just like either melodic death metal or power metal and then don’t like it to be blended with the other style. But then again some people have commented that they really are into it that we use two different genres, so I don't know.
It definitely makes you stand out from the crowd. Do you already know if there’s a chance for the latter group of people to see you live in 2026?
Matias: Definitely. At least we’ll play some shows in Finland and we might also get a chance to play some of the festivals in Central Europe. Of course I cannot promise anything at this point, but let's see how the promotion and related stuff works for this album. We have high hopes of course and everything seems to roll quite nicely. So let's hope that we gain some momentum and things turn out even better than they have been before.
